WebExpo – A really short review

So the WebExpo 2009 is over and my rating would be 3.5 out of five stars. First of all, the conference was very well organized and there were a couple of interesting talks such as “JavaFX” by Jan Sterba, “RESTful Web Applications” by Jakub Podlesak and “Automated Testing of Web Applications” (in Visual Studio 2008) by Michael Jurek.

The only negative thing to mention is not really the fault of the conference, but rather mine because I don’t speak Czech. I expected the conference to be much more international than it in fact was. I would guess that 99% of all visitors were Czech or Slovak and also almost all talks were in Czech / Slovak. Fortunately some speakers switched to English when I asked them for (thanks Jakub!) and in two out of four rooms they had life-translation. So it really wasn’t as bad, just different than I expected.

Anyway I guess I’ll visit WebExpo again next year.

Security of Cloud Computing

No matter which IT news channel you read, there’s no way you missed the dozens of articles about Cloud Computing which have been released in 2009 up to now. It looks like 2009 is the year of the Cloud, more than ever. In fact I believe that the Cloud is a great model for many applications, eventually even more than you’d think right now.
There are some things though you want to consider when planning to move your app to the Cloud. These two articles are good starting points:

There was an article on TechCrunch about what can happen if all the data of you company is in the Cloud: The Anatomy Of The Twitter Attack.

All the risks which come along with the Cloud Computing model don’t speak against the model itself. It’s all just about mastering these risks to make that model successful long term.

Cobol hits 50 and keeps counting

However, while Cobol is evidently still at large in business, a term used repeatedly to describe such systems is “legacy”.

“Legacy code supports our business model,” says Madden. “We have around 2,500 programs running in Cobol and 60 of the 100 staff in our department are focused on legacy systems.”
